Searching for Active Galactic Nuclei when the Universe was less than 2 billions years old!

December 6, 2021December 6, 2021 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

Massive galaxies and a fraction of lower mass galaxies in the Local Universe host a super massive black hole in their centre. Their mass ranges between millions and tens billions solar masses. When matter from the galaxies falls into the Read More …

#WhatIsAHEAD2020 X-ray Pulsars

November 24, 2021November 24, 2021 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

The X-ray pulsars were discovered in the 70s and are among the most luminous objects in the X-ray sky. They are binary systems that consist of a magnetized neutron star in orbit with a normal stellar companion. The magnetic field Read More …

When a Stable Star Explodes

November 22, 2021November 22, 2021 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

White dwarfs are among the most stable of stars. Left on their own, these stars that have exhausted most of their nuclear fuel — while still typically as massive as the Sun — and shrunk to a relatively small size Read More …

Large-Volume Spectroscopic Analyses of AGN and Star Forming Galaxies in the Era of JWST (Mon 21 Mar 2022 – Thu 24 Mar 2022)

November 11, 2021November 11, 2021 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisEvent

Description Massive spectroscopic datasets, in the form of IFU datacubes and large surveys consisting of thousands of spectra, have begun to stream into archives on a daily basis, and will soon include observations from NIRSpec and MIRI aboard JWST. Creating Read More …

Measuring the properties of active galactic nuclei in the Local Universe!

November 5, 2021November 5, 2021 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

The massive galaxies and a fraction of lower mass galaxies in the Local Universe host a super massive black hole (SMBH) in their centre. They have masses between millions to 10 billions times the mass of the Sun. When matter Read More …

Pandora’s Cluster

November 2, 2021November 2, 2021 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisImage

Galaxy clusters are the largest objects in the universe held together by gravity. They typically contain hundreds of galaxies (stars, gas and dust), spread over a region of whose size is roughly 1025 cm. Their total masses exceed 1048 gm. Read More …

Are you ready to explore the X-ray Universe?

Welcome to CLAXSON!

(Classification of X-ray Sources for Novices)

Now available in EN, FR, ES and GR!

CLAXSON is a platform that trains you to identify new objects observed in the X-ray sky with the European Space Agency X-ray telescope XMM-Newton. Be the first to find new supermassive black holes, stars, galaxies and other exotic objects in observations taken over the last 20 years, and help astronomers unravel the mysteries of the X-ray sky.
