Astronomers discovered the longest so far black hole jets in the Universe!

September 26, 2024September 26, 2024 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

Astronomers have found the largest pair of black hole jets ever seen, stretching a staggering 23 million light-years across space. To put that into perspective, these jets are about 240 times the diamter of our Milky Way galaxy (~100 thousand Read More …

Almost 24 years of ESA’s space-based telescope XMM-Newton: more than a million X-ray detections

July 17, 2024July 17, 2024 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

A new version of the XMM-Newton EPIC Serendipitous Source Catalogue, 4XMM-DR14, has been released by the XMM-Newton Survey Science Centre (XMM-SSC) in collaboration with the XMM-Newton SOC. This version includes an extra year of data with respect to 4XMM-DR13. 4XMM-DR14 Read More …

Launch of the SVOM gamma burst detection satellite: a new chapter opens for astroparticle physics!

July 10, 2024July 10, 2024 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

The Space-based multi-band astronomical Variable Objects Monitor (SVOM) is the first joint Franco-Chinese mission that was launched successfully on June 22nd 2024 from China’s Xichang Satellite Launch Center. It is the result of a collaboration between the two national space Read More …

A stellar black hole with the highest mass yet discovered in the Milky Way!

April 22, 2024April 22, 2024 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

Astronomers using data from European Space Agency’s Gaia mission have found the most massive stellar black hole in our own galaxy. This black hole was identified because it imposed an unstable and bizarre movement of its companion star orbiting it. Read More …

First observation of the formation of ‘rare earths’ following the merger of two neutron stars!

March 1, 2024March 1, 2024 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

Kilonovae are luminous explosions that result from the merger of two neutron stars. These rare phenomena are characterised by the emission of an intense gamma-ray burst (GRB). Gamma rays have the smallest wavelengths and the most energy of any wavelength Read More …

The eROSITA X-ray telescope makes public the largest ever catalogue of high-energy cosmic sources!

February 2, 2024February 2, 2024 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

The @eROSITA_SRG consortium has unleashed the colossal first #eROSITA X-ray telescope data release to the public with a record-breaking 900,000 cosmic sources & ~50 scientific publications. Among the 900,000 sources more than 700,000 are supermassive black holes in the center Read More …

The first light of the XRISM telescope: the case of the Galaxy cluster Abell 2319

January 11, 2024January 11, 2024 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

The X-ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission (XRISM) is a space telescope launched in September 2023 and led by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), in collaboration with NASA with additional contributions from the European Space Agency. It will study some of the Read More …

Sun Goddess particle:An extremely high-energy particle detected falling to Earth

November 25, 2023November 25, 2023 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

Cosmic rays are highly energetic subatomic particles (usually a proton) that travel with speed very close to the speed of light. Their energy range from around 1 GeV (this is the energy of a relatively small particle accelerator) to as Read More …

A new class of periodic tidal disruption events?

October 18, 2023October 18, 2023 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

A tidal disruption event (or as it’s well known as “TDE”) is an astronomical phenomenon that happens when a star passes sufficiently close to a supermassive black hole and the enormous gravitational force (tidal force) of the black hole pulls Read More …

IXPE detected a 200-year-old flare coming from Sgr A*

September 18, 2023September 18, 2023 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

The centre of the Milky Way Galaxy hosts a black hole (Sagittarius A* (Sgr A)) of about 4 million the mass of the Sun. Because of its mass, our own galaxy is considered as very “calm” at present, compared to those Read More …

Are you ready to explore the X-ray Universe?

Welcome to CLAXSON!

(Classification of X-ray Sources for Novices)

Now available in EN, FR, ES and GR!

CLAXSON is a platform that trains you to identify new objects observed in the X-ray sky with the European Space Agency X-ray telescope XMM-Newton. Be the first to find new supermassive black holes, stars, galaxies and other exotic objects in observations taken over the last 20 years, and help astronomers unravel the mysteries of the X-ray sky.
