High-energy gamma-ray emission from a compact binary merger!

December 12, 2022 Ektoras PouliasisArticle

On December 11, 2021, the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory satellite observed a gamma-ray burst, named GRB 211211A that is one of the brightest ever observed. Then, ground-based and space-based telescopes started to follow up GRB 211211A to obtain images at Read More …

Rare cosmic explosion blasts hole in established science

December 7, 2022December 7, 2022 Ektoras PouliasisArticle

On Dec. 11, 2021, NASA’s Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory detected a  blast of high-energy light from a galaxy roughly 1 billion light-years  away. The event, which was simultaneously detected by Fermi Gamma-ray  Space Telescope, brings into question what was thought Read More …

The violent Universe

May 23, 2022May 23, 2022 Ektoras PouliasisArticle

Dark matter and energy are not sufficient to explain the formation and evolution of modern galaxies. Violent phenomena, associated with the end of stars (supernovae), mergers of black holes and neutron stars, supermassive black holes accreting mass from the galactic Read More …

Black hole at the centre of our Galaxy imaged for the first time!

May 12, 2022May 12, 2022 Ektoras PouliasisArticle

The Event Horizon Telescope network has captured the second-ever direct image of a black hole — called Sagittarius A* — at the centre of the Milky Way. Radio astronomers have imaged the super massive black hole at the centre of Read More …

A new application of multi-messenger observations by ESCAPE and AHEAD2020

February 23, 2022February 24, 2022 Ektoras PouliasisArticle

The research developed within AHAED2020 has lead to innovative tools supporting multi-messenger astrophysics! Most of what is known about the Universe comes from observations of electromagnetic radiation. However, there are other “cosmic messengers.” Gravitational waves are invisible (yet incredibly fast) Read More …

Pair of supermassive black holes creates enormous bubbles!

December 17, 2021December 17, 2021 Ektoras PouliasisArticle

Four enormous cavities, or bubbles, have been found at the center of a galaxy cluster using NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory. The left panel of the following graphic shows an optical image of the galaxy cluster called RBS 797, from NASA’s Read More …

IXPE: NASA Launches New Mission to Explore Universe’s Most Dramatic Objects!

December 16, 2021December 16, 2021 Ektoras PouliasisArticle

A joint effort with the Italian Space Agency, the IXPE observatory is NASA’s first mission dedicated to measuring the polarization of X-rays from the most extreme and mysterious objects in the universe – supernova remnants, supermassive black holes, and dozens Read More …

Multi-wavelength snapshot of a repeating fast radio burst!

December 14, 2021December 14, 2021 Ektoras PouliasisArticle

With a multiwavelength campaign, a group of astronomers led by the Italian National Institute of Astrophysics (INAF) studied a repeating fast radio burst (FRB). The object FRB20201124A, discovered in November 2020, reactivated in March 2021, emitting a series of radio Read More …

Searching for Active Galactic Nuclei when the Universe was less than 2 billions years old!

December 6, 2021December 6, 2021 Ektoras PouliasisArticle

Massive galaxies and a fraction of lower mass galaxies in the Local Universe host a super massive black hole in their centre. Their mass ranges between millions and tens billions solar masses. When matter from the galaxies falls into the Read More …

The X-CLASS survey: A sample of 1646 galaxy clusters detected in X-rays 5 billions years after Big Bang to present!

November 30, 2021November 30, 2021 Ektoras PouliasisArticle

Matter in the Universe is not evenly distributed but forms a cosmic web of filaments shaped by gravity, with galaxy clusters found at their intersections. Galaxy clusters are the largest bound entities in the Universe – they trace the highest Read More …

Are you ready to explore the X-ray Universe?

Welcome to CLAXSON!

(Classification of X-ray Sources for Novices)

Now available in EN, FR, ES and GR!

CLAXSON is a platform that trains you to identify new objects observed in the X-ray sky with the European Space Agency X-ray telescope XMM-Newton. Be the first to find new supermassive black holes, stars, galaxies and other exotic objects in observations taken over the last 20 years, and help astronomers unravel the mysteries of the X-ray sky.
