Listening to new cosmic messengers

October 28, 2022October 28, 2022 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisImage

In recent years, a large network of observations has been deployed on remote places in the land, in the sea, underground and in space, to detect the signals coming from the “visible” Universe and even earlier, in the first moments Read More …

When X-rays meet the James Webb images!

October 11, 2022October 11, 2022 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisImage

X-rays from Chandra have been combined with infrared data from early publicly-released James Webb Space Telescope images. These four objects shown below were among the first images released by the telescope after it finished its commissioning process. The James Webb Read More …

Memes contest winners!

October 10, 2022October 10, 2022 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisImage

✨ The results of the Memes contest to celebrate the European Researchers’ Night are here! 🚀 We presented a joint international initiative of the Athena X-ray observatory , XMM2Athena, X-IFU, WFI consortia and the #AHEAD2020 project. The winners of the Read More …

THE-FREQUENCIES-OF-THE-UNIVERSE

June 8, 2022 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisImage

We need to study the Universe at different scales to explain the genesis and evolution of cosmic phenomena from the first cosmological processes to present day stars and galaxies. The probes we used need to be adapted to the corresponding Read More …

Star evolution

April 27, 2022April 27, 2022 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisImage

By combining our two major theories, that of the very large, General Relativity, and that of the very small, Quantum Physics (in particular nuclear and particle physics), it has been possible to construct a relatively accurate description of the life Read More …

Three views of the UNIVERSE!

April 14, 2022April 14, 2022 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisImage

The discourse on the cosmos, emerging from humans’ interest in the sky and the constellations, was further developed through the ancient Greek philosophies of Nature. During the Renaissance, the geometric and dynamic astronomy of Galileo and Newton was established, wherein Read More …

R Aquarii: The dance of a red giant and a white dwarf!

March 22, 2022March 22, 2022 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisImage

R Aquarii is a pair of a) a white dwarf star that steadily burns at a relatively cool temperature and b) a highly variable red giant. As they orbit each other, the white dwarf pulls material from the red giant Read More …

Eta Carinae: Visualization Explores A Massive Star’s Great Eruption

February 10, 2022January 28, 2022 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisImage

The three-dimensional visualization of Eta Carinae, a massive star that had an enormous eruption observed in the 1840s, is based upon multiwavelength data from Chandra, Hubble, and Spitzer. Data from each set of different wavelengths of light reveal different structures Read More …

Evolution of imaging a Black Hole!

February 9, 2022January 28, 2022 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisImage

The world’s very first simulation of a black hole 40 years earlier by Jean-Pierre Luminet, a young researcher at the CNRS at that time, published in 1979 in Astronomy and Astrophysics. It is not an artist’s view but an image Read More …

The planetary nebula NGC3242 as seen in X-rays!

January 5, 2022December 20, 2021 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisImage

😉 NGC3242, a planetary #nebula, that have been observed both by @Chandra X-ray Observatory (X-rays in magenta colour) and Hubble Space Telescope (optical in red, green & blue colours) space telescopes. 📖 #Planetary nebulas are a phase that #stars like Read More …

Are you ready to explore the X-ray Universe?

Welcome to CLAXSON!

(Classification of X-ray Sources for Novices)

Now available in EN, FR, ES and GR!

CLAXSON is a platform that trains you to identify new objects observed in the X-ray sky with the European Space Agency X-ray telescope XMM-Newton. Be the first to find new supermassive black holes, stars, galaxies and other exotic objects in observations taken over the last 20 years, and help astronomers unravel the mysteries of the X-ray sky.

Invitation to submit news
