Sagittarius A East: Rare Blast’s Remains Discovered in Milky Way Center!

February 15, 2021February 15, 2021 Ektoras PouliasisArticle

Astronomers have found evidence for an unusual type of supernova near the center of the Milky Way galaxy. This composite image below contains data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory (blue) and the NSF’s Very Large Array (red) of the supernova Read More …

Talk: X-raying the sky – finding black holes and other extreme objects, by Dr. Natalie Webb (zoom)

February 8, 2021February 8, 2021 Ektoras PouliasisEvent

The Language Resource Center (Centre de Ressources en Langues, FSI, UT3) in collaboration with the UPS in Space, the astronomy club of Toulouse III- Paul Sabatier University, are organizing a talk by Dr. Natalie Webb (IRAP), astrophysicist and English native Read More …

Astronomy Picture of the day: Jellyfish Nebula

January 26, 2021January 26, 2021 Ektoras PouliasisImage

The Jellyfish Nebula (officially known as IC 443) is a supernova remnant about 5,000 light years from Earth. Astronomers have been looking for the spinning neutron star, or pulsar, from the explosion that created the remnant. New Chandra observations have Read More …

Galaxies Hit Single, Doubles, and a Triple (Growing Black Holes)

January 25, 2021January 25, 2021 Ektoras PouliasisArticle

This new study helps reveal what happens to supermassive black holes when three galaxies merge together. This result, which used data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and several other telescopes, tells astronomers more about how galaxies and the giant black Read More …

#AthenaNuggets: Squeezing of Pulsar Wind Nebulae, by Diego F. Torres

January 18, 2021January 18, 2021 Ektoras PouliasisArticle

A pulsar is a highly magnetized rotating compact star (usually neutron stars but also white dwarfs) that emits beams of electromagnetic radiation out of its magnetic poles. This radiation can be observed only when a beam of emission is pointing Read More …

A fast and young magnetar found not that far from the Milky Way!

January 14, 2021January 14, 2021 Ektoras PouliasisArticle

In 2020, astronomers added a new member to an exclusive family of exotic objects with the discovery of a magnetar. New observations from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory help support the idea that it is also a pulsar, meaning it emits Read More …

eROSITA discovers a new Supercluster of galaxies!

January 13, 2021January 13, 2021 Ektoras PouliasisArticle

Using data from the eROSITA X-ray telescope aboard the Spektrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) observatory, astronomers have detected a previously unknown supercluster of galaxies. The newly found structure consists of eight galaxy clusters. A supercluster is a large group of smaller galaxy clusters Read More …

China launches gamma ray–hunting satellites to trace sources of gravitational waves!

January 8, 2021January 8, 2021 Ektoras PouliasisArticle

China has successfully launched a space telescope to study some of the most energetic events in the Universe. Lifting off in December 10th 2020 from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center, the Gravitational wave high-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor (GECAM, also Read More …

Black Hole’s Dust Ring May Be Casting Shadows From Heart of a Galaxy!

January 5, 2021January 5, 2021 Ektoras PouliasisArticle

Some of the most stunning views of our sky occur at sunset, when sunlight pierces the clouds, creating a mixture of bright and dark rays formed by the clouds’ shadows and the beams of light scattered by the atmosphere. Astronomers Read More …

Astronomers Observe a Bright Relativistic Jet from distant Blazar!

December 27, 2020December 27, 2020 Ektoras PouliasisArticle

A blazar is an active galactic nucleus (AGN) with a relativistic jet (a jet composed of ionized matter traveling at nearly the speed of light) directed very nearly towards the observer. Relativistic beaming of electromagnetic radiation from the jet makes Read More …

Are you ready to explore the X-ray Universe?

Welcome to CLAXSON!

(Classification of X-ray Sources for Novices)

Now available in EN, FR, ES and GR!

CLAXSON is a platform that trains you to identify new objects observed in the X-ray sky with the European Space Agency X-ray telescope XMM-Newton. Be the first to find new supermassive black holes, stars, galaxies and other exotic objects in observations taken over the last 20 years, and help astronomers unravel the mysteries of the X-ray sky.

Invitation to submit news

Astronomers are invited to advertise their work and/or recent results in our website. Publications/news related to High Energy Astrophysics are of particular interest.
