Supermassive Black Holes May Generate ‘Tsunamis’ in Escaping Gas

July 14, 2021July 14, 2021 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

Astrophysicists have used computer simulations to show that in deep in space, tsunami-like structures may form on much bigger scales than here on Earth, from gas escaping the gravitational pull of a supermassive black hole. In fact, the mysterious environment Read More …

How GRB jets “cool”: a GSSI study on Nature Communications

July 8, 2021July 8, 2021 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

Published on Nature Communications the work led by Samuele Ronchini, PhD student at GSSI and INFN associate, together with INAF, which sheds new light on cooling processes happening in jets of Gamma-Ray Bursts. What are the processes that determine the Read More …

X-ray revolution!

July 2, 2021July 2, 2021 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

After the discovery of quasars (QSO), in the mid-1960s the X-ray astronomy started and was important to understand better the nature and the properties of the Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), as the X-ray emission seemed to occur in the majority Read More …

A New Panorama of Our Galactic Center: Magnetized Threads Weave Spectacular Galactic Tapestry!

June 18, 2021June 18, 2021 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

A new panorama from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and the MeerKAT radio telescope provides a stunning view of the center of our Milky Way galaxy. It also reveals threads of superheated gas and magnetic fields, which are weaving a tapestry Read More …

Athena: the next-generation of X-ray Observatories!

June 4, 2021June 4, 2021 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

The Athena (Advanced Telescope for High ENergy Astrophysics) mission is the second long-range space mission (L2) of the long term program “Cosmic Vision” of the European Space Agency (ESA). This mission is dedicated to the scientific theme “The hot and Read More …

An Intermediate-Mass Black Hole Discovered Through the Gravitational Lensing of a Gamma-ray Burst!

May 30, 2021May 30, 2021 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

Black holes are divided, based on their mass, into supermassive black holes (SMBHs) with masses more than 1 million Suns together that reside in the centre of the galaxies and stellar black holes with masses up to 20 times the Read More …

A high-energy neutrino coincident with a tidal disruption event!

May 7, 2021May 7, 2021 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

Tracing back a ghostly particle from a star-shredding supermassive black hole, scientists have uncovered a gigantic cosmic particle accelerator. Some 700 million years ago, subatomic particles called neutrinos were hurled at nearly the speed of light toward Earth as a Read More …

Cassiopeia A: Bubbles With Titanium Trigger Titanic Explosions!

May 3, 2021May 3, 2021 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

Astronomers using NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory have announced the discovery of an important type of titanium blasting out from the center of the supernova remnant Cas A, a result that could be a major advance in understanding how some massive Read More …

New NASA Visualization Probes the Light-bending Dance of Binary Black Holes

April 20, 2021April 20, 2021 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

A pair of orbiting black holes millions of times the Sun’s mass perform a hypnotic dance in this NASA visualization. The movie traces how the black holes distort and redirect light emanating from the maelstrom of hot gas – called Read More …

First X-rays from Uranus!

April 16, 2021April 16, 2021 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

Astronomers have detected X-rays from Uranus for the first time, using NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory. This result may help scientists learn more about this enigmatic ice giant planet in our Solar System. Uranus is the seventh planet from the Sun Read More …

Are you ready to explore the X-ray Universe?

Welcome to CLAXSON!

(Classification of X-ray Sources for Novices)

Now available in EN, FR, ES and GR!

CLAXSON is a platform that trains you to identify new objects observed in the X-ray sky with the European Space Agency X-ray telescope XMM-Newton. Be the first to find new supermassive black holes, stars, galaxies and other exotic objects in observations taken over the last 20 years, and help astronomers unravel the mysteries of the X-ray sky.

Invitation to submit news

Astronomers are invited to advertise their work and/or recent results in our website. Publications/news related to High Energy Astrophysics are of particular interest.
