Monster black hole found in the early universe!

June 29, 2020June 29, 2020 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

Astronomers have discovered the second-most distant quasar ever found using three Maunakea Observatories in Hawai’i: W. M. Keck Observatory, the international Gemini Observatory, a Program of NSF’s NOIRLab, and the University of Hawai’i-owned United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT). It is Read More …

Our deepest view of the X-ray sky

June 19, 2020June 19, 2020 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

The eROSITA telescope has provided a new, sharp view of hot and energetic processes across the Universe. Over the course of 182 days, the eROSITA X-ray telescope onboard SRG has completed its first full sweep of the sky. This new Read More …

First optical measurements of Milky Way’s Fermi Bubbles probe their origin

June 16, 2020 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

Using the Wisconsin H-Alpha Mapper telescope, astronomers have for the first time measured the Fermi Bubbles in the visible light spectrum. The Fermi Bubbles are two enormous outflows of high-energy gas that emanate from the Milky Way and the finding Read More …

A New Galactic Center Adventure in Virtual Reality

June 14, 2020June 14, 2020 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

A new visualization, “Galactic Center VR,” features simulations of material streaming toward the Milky Way’s supermassive black hole, Sagittarius A*. Experience the last 500 years of cosmic evolution in this area in a free virtual reality program. This free program Read More …

‘Heart’ Of Black Hole Still Beating After 10 Years

June 11, 2020 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

The first confirmed heartbeat of a supermassive black hole is still going strong more than ten years after first being observed. X-ray satellite observations spotted the repeated beat after its signal had been blocked by our Sun for a number Read More …

Astronomers Discover New Class of Cosmic Explosions !

June 9, 2020June 9, 2020 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

Astronomers have found a pair of objects that have been added to a strange object discovered in 2018 that combined to constitute a new class of cosmic explosions. The new type of explosion shares some of the characteristics with supernova Read More …

Astronomers captured black hole emitting hot material into space!

June 1, 2020 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

Astronomers have caught a black hole hurling hot material into space at close to the speed of light. This flare-up was captured in a new movie from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory. The black hole and its companion star make up Read More …

3 million light-year long bridge linking two galaxy clusters!

May 29, 2020May 29, 2020 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle, Uncategorized

A new study, based on data from ESA’s XMM-Newton and NASA’s Chandra X-ray observatories, sheds new light on a three million light-year long bridge of hot gas linking two galaxy clusters, whose shape is being bent by the mighty activity Read More …

Nearest black hole to Earth discovered!

May 7, 2020 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

Astronomers from the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and other institutes have discovered a new stellar black hole, and it’s practically in our backyard. Researchers say the black hole is just 1,000 light-years away from Earth — closer to our solar Read More …

Star somehow survives close encounter with black hole!

April 26, 2020 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

Astronomers may have discovered a new kind of survival story: a star that had a close interaction with a giant black hole and managed to survive and tell its story through exclamations of X-rays. Scientists recorded the event with the Read More …

Are you ready to explore the X-ray Universe?

Welcome to CLAXSON!

(Classification of X-ray Sources for Novices)

Now available in EN, FR, ES and GR!

CLAXSON is a platform that trains you to identify new objects observed in the X-ray sky with the European Space Agency X-ray telescope XMM-Newton. Be the first to find new supermassive black holes, stars, galaxies and other exotic objects in observations taken over the last 20 years, and help astronomers unravel the mysteries of the X-ray sky.

Invitation to submit news
