A “bang” in LIGO and Virgo detectors signals most massive gravitational-wave source yet!

September 7, 2020September 7, 2020 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

A binary black hole merger likely produced gravitational waves equal to the energy of eight suns. For all its vast emptiness, the universe is humming with activity in the form of gravitational waves. Produced by extreme astrophysical phenomena, these reverberations Read More …

Calcium-rich supernova examined with X-rays for first time!

August 12, 2020August 12, 2020 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

Half of all the calcium in the universe—including the very calcium in our teeth and bones—was created in the last gasp of dying stars. Called “calcium-rich supernovae,” these stellar explosions are so rare that astrophysicists have struggled to find and Read More …

Rapid Changes Detected in a Black Hole May Explain Origin of the Most Energetic Radiation in the Universe!

August 10, 2020August 10, 2020 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

A team from the Astronomical Observatory of the University of Valencia has managed to observe the black hole of the active galaxy PKS1830-211 right during the most violent gamma-ray energy event ever registered in that source. Scientists have discovered very Read More …

SpARCS1049: Black Hole Fails to Do Its Job!

August 5, 2020August 5, 2020 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

A galaxy cluster is demonstrating what can happen when a supermassive black hole stops being active. SpARCS104922.6+564032.5 (SpARCS1049 for short) is a galaxy cluster located 9.9 billion light years away from Earth. Galaxy clusters contain hundreds or thousands of galaxies Read More …

Gamma-ray telescopes measure diameters of distant stars!

July 31, 2020July 31, 2020 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

By reviving a technique capable of combining specialized gamma-ray telescopes to one giant virtual instrument, scientists have measured the diameters of individual stars hundreds of light-years away. The team used the four VERITAS telescopes (Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array Read More …

In a first, astronomers watch a black hole’s corona disappear, then reappear

July 30, 2020July 30, 2020 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

It seems the universe has an odd sense of humor. While a crown-encrusted virus has run roughshod over the world, another entirely different corona about 100 million light years from Earth has mysteriously disappeared. For the first time, astronomers at Read More …

Cases of Black Hole Mistaken Identity!

July 21, 2020July 21, 2020 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

A team of researchers has identified a group of black holes that had previously been mistaken for a different kind of black hole, as described in the latest press release of Chandra X-ray Observatory. This discovery has important implications for Read More …

Breakthrough in deciphering birth of supermassive black holes

July 15, 2020 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

A research team led by scientists from Cardiff University says it is closer to understanding how a supermassive black hole (SMBH) was born thanks to a new technique that allowed them to zoom in on one of these. enigmatic cosmic Read More …

Most massive black hole yet discovered redefines ‘gargantuan’

July 10, 2020 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

Astronomers have found one of the most massive black holes yet discovered, one that is gargantuan by even astronomical standards. Known as J2157, the enormous black hole weighs in at 34 billion times the mass of the Sun and is Read More …

HOPS 383: X-rays from a newborn star hint at our sun’s earliest days!

July 6, 2020July 6, 2020 Dr. Ektoras PouliasisArticle

By detecting an X-ray flare from a very young star using NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory, researchers have reset the timeline for when stars like the sun start blasting high-energy radiation into space, as reported in our latest press release. This Read More …

Are you ready to explore the X-ray Universe?

Welcome to CLAXSON!

(Classification of X-ray Sources for Novices)

Now available in EN, FR, ES and GR!

CLAXSON is a platform that trains you to identify new objects observed in the X-ray sky with the European Space Agency X-ray telescope XMM-Newton. Be the first to find new supermassive black holes, stars, galaxies and other exotic objects in observations taken over the last 20 years, and help astronomers unravel the mysteries of the X-ray sky.

Invitation to submit news
