NASA’s Swift Helps Connect Neutrino to Star-shredding Black Hole!

March 1, 2021March 3, 2021 Ektoras PouliasisArticle

For only the second time, astronomers have linked an elusive particle called a high-energy neutrino to an object outside our galaxy. Using ground- and space-based facilities, including NASA’s Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, they traced the neutrino to a black hole Read More …

Reclusive Neutron Star May Have Been Found in Famous Supernova!

February 28, 2021February 28, 2021 Ektoras PouliasisArticle

Since astronomers captured the bright explosion of a star on February 24, 1987, they have been searching for the squashed stellar core that should have been left behind. A new study from two NASA X-ray telescopes may have finally been Read More …

Cartwheel Galaxy in optical and X-rays!!

February 20, 2021February 20, 2021 Ektoras PouliasisImage

This galaxy resembles a bull’s eye, which is appropriate because its appearance is partly due to a smaller galaxy that passed through the middle of this object. The violent collision produced shock waves that swept through the galaxy and triggered large amounts Read More …

Data Sonification: Listen to the Sounds of the Universe!

February 19, 2021February 19, 2021 Ektoras PouliasisVideo

A new project using sonification turns astronomical images from Chandra and other telescopes into sound. This allows users to “listen” to the center of the Milky Way as observed in X-ray, optical, and infrared light. As the cursor moves across Read More …

CLAXSON: Be the first to find new supermassive black holes, stars and exotic objects! (available in EN, FR, ES, GR)

February 18, 2021February 18, 2021 Ektoras PouliasisArticle, Uncategorized

The XMM-Newton X-ray observatory of the European Space Agency is celebrating the 21st anniversary of its launch into space with the publication of a new data catalogue, the 4XMM-DR10, a compilation of nearly 850,000 X-ray detections found in more than Read More …

Sagittarius A East: Rare Blast’s Remains Discovered in Milky Way Center!

February 15, 2021February 15, 2021 Ektoras PouliasisArticle

Astronomers have found evidence for an unusual type of supernova near the center of the Milky Way galaxy. This composite image below contains data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory (blue) and the NSF’s Very Large Array (red) of the supernova Read More …

Talk: X-raying the sky – finding black holes and other extreme objects, by Dr. Natalie Webb (zoom)

February 8, 2021February 8, 2021 Ektoras PouliasisEvent

The Language Resource Center (Centre de Ressources en Langues, FSI, UT3) in collaboration with the UPS in Space, the astronomy club of Toulouse III- Paul Sabatier University, are organizing a talk by Dr. Natalie Webb (IRAP), astrophysicist and English native Read More …

Astronomy Picture of the day: Jellyfish Nebula

January 26, 2021January 26, 2021 Ektoras PouliasisImage

The Jellyfish Nebula (officially known as IC 443) is a supernova remnant about 5,000 light years from Earth. Astronomers have been looking for the spinning neutron star, or pulsar, from the explosion that created the remnant. New Chandra observations have Read More …

Galaxies Hit Single, Doubles, and a Triple (Growing Black Holes)

January 25, 2021January 25, 2021 Ektoras PouliasisArticle

This new study helps reveal what happens to supermassive black holes when three galaxies merge together. This result, which used data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and several other telescopes, tells astronomers more about how galaxies and the giant black Read More …

#AthenaNuggets: Squeezing of Pulsar Wind Nebulae, by Diego F. Torres

January 18, 2021January 18, 2021 Ektoras PouliasisArticle

A pulsar is a highly magnetized rotating compact star (usually neutron stars but also white dwarfs) that emits beams of electromagnetic radiation out of its magnetic poles. This radiation can be observed only when a beam of emission is pointing Read More …

Are you ready to explore the X-ray Universe?

Welcome to CLAXSON!

(Classification of X-ray Sources for Novices)

Now available in EN, FR, ES and GR!

CLAXSON is a platform that trains you to identify new objects observed in the X-ray sky with the European Space Agency X-ray telescope XMM-Newton. Be the first to find new supermassive black holes, stars, galaxies and other exotic objects in observations taken over the last 20 years, and help astronomers unravel the mysteries of the X-ray sky.
