Investigating cosmic discordances

Abstract:

The Cosmic Microwave Background temperature and polarization anisotropy measurements from the Planck mission have provided strong confirmation of the LCDM model of structure formation. However, this model is based on unknown quantities and can be considered an approximation to a more realistic scenario that still needs to be fully understood. With the increase in experimental sensitivity, therefore, deviations from the LCDM model are expected, and, actually, a few interesting tensions between the cosmological probes and anomalies in the CMB data are present with different statistical significance. While some proportion of these discrepancies may have a systematic origin, their persistence across probes strongly hints at cracks in the standard LCDM cosmological scenario. The most statistically significant are the Hubble constant and the S8 parameter tensions, the Alens anomaly and a curvature of the Universe. I will review these tensions, showing some interesting extended cosmological scenarios that can alleviate them.
