Gamma-ray telescopes measure diameters of distant stars!

July 31, 2020July 31, 2020 Ektoras PouliasisArticle

By reviving a technique capable of combining specialized gamma-ray telescopes to one giant virtual instrument, scientists have measured the diameters of individual stars hundreds of light-years away. The team used the four VERITAS telescopes (Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array Read More …

In a first, astronomers watch a black hole’s corona disappear, then reappear

July 30, 2020July 30, 2020 Ektoras PouliasisArticle

It seems the universe has an odd sense of humor. While a crown-encrusted virus has run roughshod over the world, another entirely different corona about 100 million light years from Earth has mysteriously disappeared. For the first time, astronomers at Read More …

Cases of Black Hole Mistaken Identity!

July 21, 2020July 21, 2020 Ektoras PouliasisArticle

A team of researchers has identified a group of black holes that had previously been mistaken for a different kind of black hole, as described in the latest press release of Chandra X-ray Observatory. This discovery has important implications for Read More …

Breakthrough in deciphering birth of supermassive black holes

July 15, 2020 Ektoras PouliasisArticle

A research team led by scientists from Cardiff University says it is closer to understanding how a supermassive black hole (SMBH) was born thanks to a new technique that allowed them to zoom in on one of these. enigmatic cosmic Read More …

Most massive black hole yet discovered redefines ‘gargantuan’

July 10, 2020 Ektoras PouliasisArticle

Astronomers have found one of the most massive black holes yet discovered, one that is gargantuan by even astronomical standards. Known as J2157, the enormous black hole weighs in at 34 billion times the mass of the Sun and is Read More …

HOPS 383: X-rays from a newborn star hint at our sun’s earliest days!

July 6, 2020July 6, 2020 Ektoras PouliasisArticle

By detecting an X-ray flare from a very young star using NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory, researchers have reset the timeline for when stars like the sun start blasting high-energy radiation into space, as reported in our latest press release. This Read More …

Are you ready to explore the X-ray Universe?

Welcome to CLAXSON!

(Classification of X-ray Sources for Novices)

CLAXSON is a platform that trains you to identify new objects observed in the X-ray sky with the European Space Agency X-ray telescope XMM-Newton. Be the first to find new supermassive black holes, stars, galaxies and other exotic objects in observations taken over the last 20 years, and help astronomers unravel the mysteries of the X-ray sky.
